Demand for HDTVs has slowed to its lowest rate since 2002. While this may not be so surprising given the economic conditions, it's interesting because of the switch from analog to digital TV next February. Though consumers don't have to buy an HDTV for the switchover, it will obviously help increase demand.
So the question is: When should you buy an HDTV (assuming you want one in the next year)? My guess is prices will go up in November since it will be a few months before the switchover, Christmas and the Super Bowl. And if the next several months are lean economically and sales do indeed slow significantly, prices are bound to come down a bit. So the best buying zone would seem to be this summer, probably May through July.
Now I just have to see if I can get this plan past the Baroness.
When to Buy an HDTV

The right time to buy an HDTV? Never. Unless you want to get absorbed in the disappointing tech-cycle. I have a great Sharp HDTV with one dead pixel in the corner. I can see it there, even though it looks like a grain of black sand. Governement regulations allow seven dead pixels before a set can before returned. Then you have HDTV channels which are always choppy because A) your set is 1080p and their signal is still at 1080i and B) the cable company or MSO hasn't designated enough bandwidth for a perfect signal. Keep in mind, HD signals are huge!So anyway, yes, never buy anything- ever, otherwise you'll be biding your time until the rest of technology catches up with whatever the heck you bought first. Sigh.
This is the kind of grouchy old-man commenting that this blog is created for. If we're talking about tech incompatibilities, I hate the fact that cell chargers are totally different across the board. Just pisses me off.
